SpaceLift Products Awarded U.S. Patent on Invention of Automated Attic Access Lift with Integrated Stairway
LOS ANGELES—November 8, 2005—SpaceLift Products, Inc. (SLP), an innovative developer of automated residential storage access solutions, today announced that it has been awarded U.S. Patent No. 6,962,236. The patent covers SLP’s novel invention of the automated attic access lift complete with an integrated stairway. SLP has implemented this new technology into its SpaceLift 6000 attic lift system which will be introduced to the market at the International Builders Show in Orlando, Florida in January 2006.
The SpaceLift 6000 attic lift system features a lift platform carried by a frame that mounts into a standard 22-1/2 x 54-inch framed opening in the ceiling. The SpaceLift frame includes a mechanical drive train that lifts and lowers the lift platform using four cables. The lift platform is big enough to carry most household storage items with a weight capacity of 75 pounds. The integrated stairway disappears into the ceiling when not in use. When the stairway is deployed, the lift platform ordinarily remains stowed in the attic out of the way of the access opening. This permits the homeowner’s unimpeded use of the stairway to access the attic. Then, when needed to transport storage items, the lift platform automatically moves into position above the attic opening and travels down the guide track of the stairway. In a reverse process, the lift platform returns to the stowed position to enable the homeowner to resume use of the stairway, allowing an individual to safely load and unload items from the attic storage space.
The lift mechanism and integrated stairway was invented by the SLP research and development team in Southern California. “I am very excited that we were awarded the patent, which recognizes our innovation and leadership in automated access solutions,” said Brian Berliner, president and CEO of SLP. “After a major investment of time and effort by our research and development team, we developed a way to efficiently integrate an automated lift with a deployable stairway. Before this invention, there was no convenient way to move storage items into an attic space, other than risking injury by physically carrying bulky items up a ladder. Because our invention enables both lift capability and homeowner access through a single attic opening, it also saves space and reduces installation time and cost.”
